Story of the Week:

Ganguly-Buchanan Spat:

It all started on 24th march 2009, when during a joint press conference of Kolkata knight riders addressed by Sourav Ganguly and Coach John Buchanan. None among press anticipated the surprising announcement made by the coach on having multiple captains for the team in forthcoming series of IPL from April 18th. All the more what raised the eyebrows was that neither Sourav nor Buchanan was looking eye in eye during the whole press conference. Many doubted could this be another row of infamous spat between the aggressive former Indian captain and another Australian coach.

The others who were in fray for sharing the captaincy with Sourav are Chris Gayle and Bredon McCullam (New Zealand). Ganguly was clearly dejected over this announcement which could be made from his statement “John has all the right to make the decision; he is the coach of the team…. I have nothing to say about this.”

The storm it generated was so huge given the popularity Ganguly shares in this cricket crazy country that it had the management come to the press and clarify the idea behind the “multiple captains”. On March 31st the management made it clear that it was not multiple captains leading the team, but a set of strategists forming a core committee heading different departments of batting, fielding, bowling etc… And assisting the captain. The statement also reinstated that “the captain of the team is one and only one”. Ultimately, the Kolkata Knight Riders averted a storm in making just in time. But, how long will they be successful in keeping it under wraps is for anyone’s guess.
